A detailed woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicting the inverted crucifixion of Saint Peter, rendered with the sharp, expressive lines of the Northern Renaissance.
This woodcut by Lucas Cranach the Elder depicts the traditional account of Saint Peter's execution, where he was crucified upside down at his own request. The composition is dense, featuring a central figure of the saint inverted upon a wooden cross, surrounded by a crowd of onlookers and soldiers. Cranach employs a vigorous line quality, characteristic of his graphic work during the early sixteenth century, to define the figures and the rugged terrain.
In the foreground, soldiers are shown in contemporary sixteenth-century armour, a common practice in Northern Renaissance art to bring biblical events into the viewer's own time. The presence of a small dog in the lower-left corner adds a touch of domestic realism to the otherwise grim scene. Above the figures, two coats of arms are visible, which identify the patron or the context of the commission. The background features a rocky outcrop and a distant castle, typical of the German landscape style favoured by the artist.
Cranach was a central figure in the German art world, known for his close association with the Reformation and his prolific output of prints. This work demonstrates his ability to manage complex narrative scenes within the constraints of the woodblock medium. The contrast between the light and shadow is achieved through hatching and cross-hatching, creating a sense of volume and texture in the clothing and the wooden cross. The print is a fine example of the technical skill required to produce such detailed imagery during the period. It offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the era, where religious narratives were disseminated through mass-produced prints to a wide audience.
