A detailed 19th-century engraving depicting the martyrdom of Saint Peter, featuring dramatic figures and classical composition.
This fine art print reproduces the dramatic narrative of the martyrdom of Saint Peter of Verona, a 13th-century Dominican friar. Pierre Louis Henri Laurent, a skilled French engraver, captures the intensity of the event through precise line work and tonal variation. The composition follows the classical tradition of religious history painting, where the central figures are arranged to guide the viewer through the violent action.
In the foreground, the saint lies on the ground while his assailant stands over him, weapon raised. To the left, a companion flees, his posture conveying panic and distress. Above the scene, two putti descend from the clouds, holding the palm branch of martyrdom, which adds a layer of divine intervention to the earthly struggle. The setting is a dense, wooded area, rendered with careful attention to light and shadow to create a sense of depth and atmosphere.
Laurent was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of original works into the medium of print. His technique relies on a combination of etched lines for structure and burin engraving for the subtle gradations of tone. This approach allows for a high degree of detail in the foliage and the musculature of the figures. The arched top of the print suggests it was intended to mimic the form of an altarpiece or a niche, a common convention in 19th-century printmaking. This piece offers a clear example of the technical proficiency required to reproduce complex historical scenes for a wider audience during the early 19th century.
