A detailed Neoclassical engraving depicting the martyrdom of Saint Peter of Verona, featuring dramatic figures and celestial imagery.
This engraving depicts the violent death of Saint Peter of Verona, a thirteenth-century Dominican friar. The composition follows the conventions of Neoclassical history painting, prioritising dramatic narrative and anatomical precision. In the foreground, the saint lies on the ground while his assailant stands over him, weapon raised. A second figure, likely a companion or witness, recoils in horror to the left. The scene is set within a dense, wooded area, which provides a dark, atmospheric backdrop for the figures.
Above the struggle, two putti descend from the clouds. They hold a palm branch, a traditional symbol of martyrdom, and a crown, signifying the saint's spiritual victory over his earthly suffering. The artist, Pierre Louis Henri Laurent, employs a sophisticated range of tonal values to create depth and volume. The contrast between the light emanating from the heavens and the shadowed forest floor directs the viewer's attention to the central action. The fine lines of the engraving capture the texture of the foliage, the folds of the drapery, and the muscular tension of the figures with clarity.
Laurent was a skilled engraver known for his technical proficiency in reproducing complex compositions. This work reflects the period's interest in religious themes, often treated with a theatrical sensibility. The arched frame suggests the print may have been intended to evoke the appearance of a larger painted altarpiece. The balance between the brutal reality of the event and the celestial intervention above is characteristic of the period's approach to hagiographic subjects. This print offers a detailed look at the craftsmanship of early nineteenth-century French printmaking, where the engraver's ability to translate painterly effects into monochrome was highly valued.
