A classic Dutch Golden Age group portrait by Frans Hals, depicting the officers and members of an Amsterdam civic guard militia.
The Meagre Company, formally titled The Company of Captain Reinier Reael and Lieutenant Cornelis Michielsz. Blaeuw, is a large-scale group portrait commissioned by a civic guard militia in Amsterdam. Frans Hals, a Dutch Golden Age painter based in Haarlem, was invited to complete the work after the original artist, Pieter Codde, failed to finish the commission. The painting depicts the officers and members of the militia in a formal yet dynamic arrangement.
Hals applied his characteristic loose brushwork to the canvas, a technique that allows for a sense of movement and spontaneity within the static group portrait format. The figures are dressed in the fashion of the 1630s, featuring dark doublets, white ruffs, and sashes. The composition is structured by the vertical lines of the pikes and muskets held by the men, which create a rhythm across the frame. Despite the formal nature of the commission, Hals captured individual expressions and postures, avoiding the rigid uniformity often found in militia portraits of the period.
The painting is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It remains a primary example of the Dutch civic guard portrait tradition, where the collective identity of the militia is balanced with the individual status of its members. The palette is dominated by muted tones, including blacks, greys, and browns, which serve to focus attention on the faces and the white collars of the subjects. The lighting is managed to create depth, with figures receding into the background while others occupy the foreground, providing a sense of three-dimensional space. This work demonstrates the technical skill of Hals in handling large groups, ensuring that each figure retains a distinct presence within the collective scene.
