A 1916 Metaphysical painting by Giorgio de Chirico, featuring a collection of geometric forms and a map arranged in a dream-like, stage-like space.
Giorgio de Chirico painted The Melancholy of Departure in 1916, during a period when his work shifted from the expansive, empty piazzas of his earlier career toward the claustrophobic, object-oriented compositions of his Metaphysical period. This work displays a collection of disparate items, including wooden frames, geometric shapes, and a map, arranged in a manner that defies conventional spatial logic. The inclusion of the map at the base, complete with dotted travel routes, introduces a cartographic element that contrasts with the abstract, constructed forms above it.
The composition is marked by a sense of stillness and displacement. De Chirico places these objects in a shallow, stage-like space, removing them from their functional contexts. The palette is dominated by muted greens, ochres, and cool blues, which contribute to the detached, dream-like atmosphere characteristic of his Metaphysical paintings. By isolating these objects, the artist invites the viewer to consider the relationship between memory, travel, and the physical world. The work avoids narrative clarity, instead focusing on the psychological weight of the objects themselves.
De Chirico was a primary figure in the development of Metaphysical Art, a movement that influenced the later Surrealist painters. His approach to painting involves the juxtaposition of ordinary items to create a sense of unease or mystery. In this piece, the rigid lines of the wooden structures interact with the organic, textured appearance of the map, creating a visual tension that is typical of his output during the First World War. The painting remains a primary example of how de Chirico used classical and modern motifs to explore themes of absence and the passage of time.
