This etching, known as The Mill, is a characteristic example of Rembrandt van Rijn's mastery of the medium. Produced in 1641, the work demonstrates his ability to convey atmosphere and texture through precise, economical line work. The composition focuses on a Dutch windmill, a common subject in the seventeenth-century Netherlands, positioned alongside a small cottage.
Rembrandt employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the structure of the mill and the surrounding terrain. The lines vary in weight and density, creating a sense of volume and light without the need for extensive shading. The sky is left largely empty, which directs the viewer's attention to the architectural details and the subtle textures of the thatched roof and wooden supports.
