This miniature originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript commissioned during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The narrative cycle consists of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress over successive nights. This specific folio illustrates the tenth night, depicting a monk returning the parrot to its rightful owner, a merchant.

The composition follows the conventions of the Mughal school, which synthesised Persian aesthetic traditions with indigenous Indian stylistic elements. The scene is divided into two distinct zones: the upper portion contains elegant Nasta'liq script, while the lower section presents the narrative action. The monk is shown seated within a modest structure, his posture relaxed as he interacts with the merchant. The merchant, dressed in a vibrant red tunic, stands before him, extending his hand to receive the bird.

The artist, Lalu, employs a clear, narrative-driven approach. The figures are rendered with precise outlines, and the colour palette relies on saturated tones of red, blue, and gold to define the architectural and natural elements. The background features a stylised golden hillock, a common motif in the period, which provides a sense of place without attempting realistic depth. The brickwork of the structure and the patterned textile upon which the monk sits demonstrate the attention to detail characteristic of the imperial workshops. This work offers a glimpse into the literary and visual culture of the sixteenth-century Mughal court, where storytelling and artistic production were closely linked. The manuscript itself is a primary example of the early development of the Mughal style, showing the transition from the more rigid Persian models to a more fluid, expressive mode of representation that would define the later imperial period.
