Henri Rousseau, a self-taught customs officer, produced this work during the final year of his life. It belongs to his series of jungle paintings, a subject he explored throughout his career despite never leaving France. His inspiration came from botanical gardens, illustrated books, and taxidermy specimens found in Parisian museums.

The composition features two monkeys positioned within a dense, stylised thicket. Rousseau employs a flat perspective, where individual leaves and branches are rendered with meticulous, almost taxonomic precision. The foliage creates a screen-like effect, obscuring the background and pushing the subjects to the front of the picture plane. The monkeys themselves are depicted with a direct, frontal gaze, a characteristic trait of Rousseau's portraiture style.

His approach to colour is deliberate, relying on a palette dominated by various shades of green, punctuated by the warm, circular forms of the fruit. The lack of traditional atmospheric perspective gives the work a dreamlike, static quality. Rousseau's technique involves layering paint to create smooth, solid surfaces, avoiding the visible brushwork common among his contemporaries in the Impressionist or Post-Impressionist circles. This work demonstrates his unique ability to construct an imagined reality through careful observation of disparate elements, synthesised into a singular, cohesive vision.
