As a Flemish artist who spent significant time in Italy, Wildens developed a keen eye for the architectural and social nuances of the region. The composition is structured around a central plaza, framed by buildings that recede into the distance, creating a sense of depth typical of the period. Figures in various states of motion populate the foreground and middle ground, suggesting the festive atmosphere of Vastenavond, or Shrove Tuesday.
The artist employs a delicate pen and ink technique, supplemented by grey wash to define shadows and volume. The lines are precise, capturing the movement of the horses, the carriage, and the animated figures without unnecessary clutter.
