A serene 1884 woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika, capturing a moonlit view over Shinagawa Bay through a framed interior perspective.
This woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika, titled The Moon Beyond Shinagawa, originates from his series One Hundred Views of Musashi Province. Published in 1884, the work demonstrates the artist's interest in light and atmosphere, a departure from the traditional flat colour blocks of earlier Ukiyo-e masters. Kiyochika was influenced by Western photography and painting techniques, which he applied to the Japanese print medium to capture the subtle gradations of a moonlit night.
The composition is framed from an interior perspective, looking out through a structure towards the sea. A red fabric awning hangs from the top left, creating a diagonal tension that guides the eye toward the distant horizon. In the foreground, a paper lantern decorated with floral motifs provides a domestic contrast to the expansive, dark blue tones of the night sky and water. The moon, rendered as a pale, luminous disc, casts a reflection across the surface of the bay, where a single boat with a white sail navigates the calm waters.
Kiyochika uses a sophisticated colour palette of deep indigos, muted teals, and sharp reds to define the nocturnal setting. The print avoids the heavy outlines typical of the Edo period, opting instead for soft transitions that mimic the effects of light and shadow. This approach reflects the changing aesthetic of the Meiji era, as Japanese artists began to incorporate foreign artistic concepts while maintaining traditional subject matter. The inclusion of the lantern and the architectural frame adds a sense of human presence within the vast, quiet environment of the bay. This print remains a representative example of the transition between classical woodblock traditions and the modern sensibilities that would define the Shin-hanga movement in the early twentieth century.
