Description

A classic Impressionist study of the medieval bridge at Moret-sur-Loing, capturing the soft light and atmospheric qualities of a late afternoon.

Alfred Sisley, a dedicated practitioner of Impressionism, spent his later years in the town of Moret-sur-Loing. This work captures the medieval bridge and the surrounding architecture as the day draws to a close. Sisley focuses on the atmospheric conditions, using a palette that shifts from the cool blues of the sky to the warmer, golden tones reflecting off the water.

The composition is anchored by the stone structures of the bridge and the nearby buildings, which provide a sense of stability against the fluid, shifting surface of the river. Sisley employs short, broken brushstrokes to convey the movement of the water and the texture of the clouds. The trees on the right bank, rendered in autumn hues, frame the scene and draw the eye toward the horizon.

Unlike some of his contemporaries who sought out urban spectacle, Sisley preferred the quietude of the French countryside. His approach here is observational, documenting the way light alters the appearance of familiar stone and water. The sky occupies a significant portion of the canvas, demonstrating his interest in meteorological effects. The painting avoids dramatic narrative, instead presenting a moment of stillness. The application of paint is consistent across the surface, creating a unified visual experience where the sky and the river share a similar quality of light. This piece is representative of his late-career focus on the Loing river, where he produced numerous variations of the same subject under different seasonal and temporal conditions.

Artist Biography

Alfred Sisley

Sisley applied for French citizenship in 1898 and was refused. He applied again. Illness intervened. He died a British citizen in France, having never held French nationality, despite living there for almost his entire adult life.

He was born in Paris in 1839 to English parents. His father William ran a luxury goods import-export business. At eighteen, Sisley was sent to London to study commerce. He came back wanting to paint. He studied alongside Monet, Renoir, and Bazille at Gleyre's studio in the early 1860s.

He was the most landscape-committed of the Impressionists: he painted almost nothing else. No portraits, no cafe scenes, no modern life. His father's business collapsed during the Franco-Prussian War. Sisley had been financially comfortable until then; after 1870, he lived in poverty for the rest of his life. In 1876 he painted a series of six canvases of the catastrophic Seine flooding at Port-Marly: moody skies, planks laid as walkways, skiffs serving as ferries. They are among his finest works.

He died of throat cancer in 1899 at Moret-sur-Loing, aged fifty-nine. His partner Eugenie Lescouezec had died a few months earlier. Prices for his paintings increased almost immediately after his death.
