This illustration by Walter Crane shows a classical scene with a figure on horseback being greeted by a crowd. The artwork features Crane's characteristic clear lines and decorative details.
Walter Crane (1845-1915) was an English artist and book illustrator. He is considered one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation, alongside Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway. Crane was a versatile artist, producing paintings, illustrations, graphic designs, and socialist propaganda. He was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, sharing its interest in decorative design and traditional craftsmanship. Crane served as director of design at the Manchester School of Art. He also wrote and lectured extensively on art and design. 'The multitude saluted him with loud acclamations' depicts a classical scene. A figure in a red robe rides a white horse, surrounded by a crowd of people. The architecture in the background suggests an ancient Greek or Roman setting. The illustration style is typical of Crane's work, with clear lines and a focus on decorative details. The colour palette is restrained, with soft blues, reds, and creams.
