A detailed seventeenth-century etching depicting the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, after a composition by Jacques Blanchard.
This fine art print reproduces the composition of Jacques Blanchard, a French painter known for his influence by the Venetian school. The scene depicts the Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine, a traditional subject in Christian iconography. The Virgin Mary sits centrally, supporting the Christ Child, who reaches out to place a ring upon the finger of Saint Catherine. The figures are rendered with the soft, rounded forms characteristic of the mid-seventeenth-century French Baroque style.
Antoine Garnier, the printmaker, employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to define the volume of the drapery and the musculature of the figures. The light source appears to emanate from the Christ Child, creating a radiant glow that illuminates the faces of the two women and casts gentle shadows across their garments. The heavy, folded fabric of the curtain above provides a sense of enclosure, directing the viewer's attention to the central interaction. The composition is balanced and calm, avoiding the excessive drama often associated with later Baroque works, and instead favouring a measured, classical approach to the narrative.
Garnier was a skilled engraver who frequently translated the works of contemporary painters into prints, allowing their compositions to reach a wider audience. This particular work demonstrates his technical precision in capturing the textures of cloth and the subtle expressions of the subjects. The print is a clear example of the collaborative nature of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the roles of inventor (Blanchard) and engraver (Garnier) were distinct yet complementary. The inclusion of the inscription at the base provides provenance regarding the original painter and the publisher, typical of the period's print production standards.
