A quiet study of a figure resting on a lawn, painted by Gustave Caillebotte during his time at Yerres.
Gustave Caillebotte, a central figure among the French Impressionists, often turned his gaze toward the leisure activities of the Parisian bourgeoisie and the quiet corners of his own estate at Yerres. In this work, he depicts a figure resting on the grass, shielded by the trunk of a tree. The composition is notable for its high vantage point, a technique Caillebotte frequently employed to flatten the pictorial space and focus attention on the geometry of the scene.
The figure, dressed in casual attire including a straw hat, is rendered with a sense of informality. The blue of the trousers and jacket contrasts sharply with the expansive, bright green lawn. Caillebotte uses short, visible brushstrokes to capture the texture of the grass and the dappled light filtering through the foliage. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the fleeting effects of light in urban settings, Caillebotte here explores a moment of stillness and private repose. The shadow cast by the figure provides a dark anchor for the composition, preventing the bright green field from overwhelming the subject.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of modern life and the natural world. While he is often associated with the architectural precision of his urban scenes, his works from the Yerres period demonstrate a keen sensitivity to the colours and rhythms of the countryside. The lack of narrative detail encourages the viewer to focus on the formal qualities of the work, such as the balance of colour and the arrangement of shapes across the canvas. It is a study in quietude, capturing a brief pause in the day with directness and clarity.
