A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Giulio Bonasone, depicting a gathering of figures beneath a celestial star.
This engraving by Giulio Bonasone depicts a gathering of figures beneath a celestial star. Bonasone, a Bolognese artist active during the sixteenth century, is recognised for his technical skill in copperplate engraving. His work often reflects the influence of contemporary masters such as Michelangelo and Raphael, whose compositions he frequently translated into print form.
The scene presents a complex arrangement of figures, including women and children, positioned in a wooded setting. A central male figure, draped in heavy robes, gestures towards the group, while a star shines in the upper left corner. The use of hatching and cross-hatching creates volume in the drapery and depth in the surrounding trees. Bonasone employs a clear, controlled line to define the musculature of the figures and the textures of the fabric. The composition balances the human forms against the natural environment, creating a sense of narrative focus.
As a printmaker, Bonasone contributed to the dissemination of Italian Renaissance imagery across Europe. His prints allowed collectors and artists to study the compositions of major painters without needing to travel to Rome or Florence. This particular work demonstrates his ability to manage multiple figures within a single frame, maintaining clarity through precise line work. The print is a representative example of the mid-sixteenth-century Italian approach to engraving, where the focus remains on anatomical accuracy and the rhythmic flow of drapery. The inclusion of the star provides a narrative anchor, suggesting a biblical context for the assembly. The work is printed on paper, showing the characteristic tonal range achievable through the intaglio process.
