A detailed woodblock triptych by Utagawa Sadahide depicting the bustling commercial activity of the newly opened port of Yokohama in 1860.
This triptych by Utagawa Sadahide captures the rapid transformation of Yokohama following the opening of its port to foreign trade in 1859. As a prominent artist of the Yokohama-e genre, Sadahide documented the influx of new goods, people, and architectural styles that defined this period of Japanese history. The composition presents a bustling street scene, framed by traditional Japanese merchant houses, yet filled with the activity of a modernising commercial hub.
The print displays the technical precision characteristic of mid-nineteenth-century woodblock production. The artist employs a clear, linear perspective to guide the eye down the central thoroughfare, where figures engage in the transport of cargo and daily commerce. The inclusion of cherry blossoms provides a seasonal marker, contrasting the traditional aesthetic with the changing social reality of the port city. The colour palette relies on the distinct pigments available to the ukiyo-e school, including the deep Prussian blue of the sky and the soft pinks of the flora.
Sadahide was a student of Utagawa Kunisada and became known for his detailed depictions of the port city. His work serves as a visual record of the Meiji-era transition. The print is divided into three panels, a common format for large-scale narrative scenes in Japanese printmaking. Each section maintains a balance between the architectural rigidity of the buildings and the fluid movement of the crowd. This piece offers a view into the intersection of traditional Japanese life and the early stages of international engagement, capturing the energy of a society in transition without relying on romanticised artifice.
