An atmospheric 1868 etching by Charles-François Daubigny, depicting a quiet, rural orchard scene with figures and a reflective stream.
Charles-François Daubigny, a central figure of the Barbizon School, produced this etching in 1868. The work captures a quiet, rural scene, demonstrating his technical mastery of the print medium. Daubigny often sought to record the immediate atmosphere of the French countryside, moving away from the rigid academic standards of his time to favour direct observation.
The composition features a central, spindly tree that reaches upward, its bare branches silhouetted against a softly hatched sky. Small birds are perched in the upper canopy, adding a sense of stillness to the scene. Below, two figures stand near the base of the trees, partially obscured by the dense, textured foliage. A small stream or pond occupies the foreground, its surface rendered with horizontal lines that suggest calm water reflecting the light. The ground is covered in grasses and low-lying vegetation, executed with varied, quick strokes that convey the organic messiness of an unkempt orchard.
Daubigny was an advocate for plein-air painting and printmaking, often working from his studio boat, the Botin. This allowed him to observe the riverbanks and rural settings from a unique perspective. His etchings are noted for their spontaneity and the way he utilised the copper plate to capture light and shadow. In this piece, the contrast between the delicate, thin lines of the tree branches and the darker, more concentrated marks in the undergrowth creates a sense of depth. The work avoids excessive detail, focusing instead on the overall mood and the quiet interaction between the figures and their environment. It is a representative example of his later graphic work, where he refined his ability to suggest form through minimal, expressive marks.
