A 1916 Synthetic Cubist still life by Juan Gris, featuring a packet of tobacco and a glass rendered through geometric planes and textured surfaces.
Juan Gris, a central figure in the development of Synthetic Cubism, produced The Packet of Tobacco in 1916. This work demonstrates his methodical approach to the genre of still life, where objects are deconstructed into geometric planes and reassembled to suggest multiple viewpoints simultaneously. Unlike the earlier, more fragmented Analytic Cubism, this piece employs clear, overlapping shapes and a controlled colour palette to define the spatial relationships between the tobacco packet, the glass, and the table surface.
The composition is anchored by a strong diagonal, which creates a sense of tension across the canvas. Gris incorporates textures, such as the wood grain effect on the table and the patterned fabric, to ground the abstract forms in a recognisable reality. The inclusion of the number 30 on a small slip of paper is a characteristic device of the period, often used by Cubist painters to introduce typographic elements that disrupt the illusion of depth. By flattening the pictorial space, Gris forces the viewer to engage with the painting as a constructed object rather than a window into a scene.
This work reflects the artist's focus on mathematical precision and architectural structure. The interplay of light and shadow is not derived from a single source but is instead distributed to clarify the edges of each form. The result is a balanced arrangement where every element, from the curve of the glass to the sharp corners of the packet, contributes to a cohesive visual logic. It remains a clear example of the rigour Gris brought to his practice during his most productive years in Paris.
