Käthe Kollwitz
A photographic study of Käthe Kollwitz's granite sculpture, The Parents, depicting the artist and her husband in a state of mourning.
The Parents is a sculptural work by Käthe Kollwitz, originally conceived as a memorial for her son, Peter, who died in the First World War. The figures represent the artist and her husband, Karl, in a state of mourning. The sculpture consists of two kneeling figures, carved from granite, positioned on separate stone plinths. The father stands upright with his arms crossed, his gaze fixed forward, while the mother is hunched over, her head bowed in grief. Kollwitz worked on this project for nearly two decades, refining the forms to capture the weight of personal loss. The figures are simplified, avoiding unnecessary detail to focus on the posture and the emotional gravity of the subjects. The granite material provides a sense of permanence and austerity, reflecting the somber nature of the memorial. The work was eventually installed at the Vladslo German war cemetery in Belgium, where it remains today. This print captures the physical presence of the statues within their outdoor setting. The composition emphasises the isolation of the two figures, separated by space yet united by their shared experience of bereavement. The textures of the stone contrast with the surrounding natural environment, highlighting the stillness of the memorial. Kollwitz often explored themes of suffering, poverty, and the human condition throughout her career, and this sculpture is a direct expression of her own experience with the consequences of conflict. The work avoids sentimentality, opting for a direct and honest portrayal of parental grief. It is a study in human endurance and the quiet, internalised nature of mourning.
