A cityscape by Maurice Utrillo, 'The Passage (The Dead End)' captures a quiet street in Paris with muted colours and textured brushwork. This fine art print brings a touch of Parisian charm to any room.
Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955) was a French painter known for his cityscapes, particularly of Montmartre in Paris. Born Maurice Valadon, he was the son of artist Suzanne Valadon, who named him Utrillo after Miguel Utrillo, who may or may not have been his biological father. Utrillo struggled with mental illness and alcoholism throughout his life, and his artistic career was encouraged as a form of therapy. 'The Passage (The Dead End)' depicts a narrow Parisian street, likely in Montmartre. The buildings are rendered in muted tones of beige, brown, and white, with dark shutters and windows adding contrast. The street recedes into the distance, creating a sense of depth, although the perspective is somewhat flattened. The sky is overcast, contributing to the painting's melancholic mood. Utrillo's characteristic impasto technique is evident in the textured surfaces of the buildings and the street. The composition is simple yet effective, drawing the viewer into the quiet, almost deserted scene.
