A fine art print of Mateo Cerezo's seventeenth-century oil painting, depicting the Penitent Mary Magdalene in a moment of quiet, atmospheric reflection.
Mateo Cerezo (II) was a significant figure in the Madrid school of the mid-seventeenth century. His work reflects the influence of Titian and the Venetian school, which reached Spain through the royal collections. This painting depicts Mary Magdalene in a moment of intense spiritual reflection. She is shown with her traditional attributes: the skull, representing mortality, and the open book, symbolising meditation on scripture. In the background, a crucifix provides the focus for her gaze.
Cerezo employs a technique characterised by soft, fluid brushwork and a muted palette. The light source is dramatic, typical of the tenebrist tradition, which creates a strong contrast between the illuminated figure and the dark, atmospheric surroundings. The texture of the white fabric draped across her shoulders is rendered with loose, confident strokes, contrasting with the more precise details of the book and the skull. Her expression is one of quiet sorrow, avoiding excessive theatricality in favour of a more internalised emotional state.
This work demonstrates the artist's ability to balance technical skill with religious narrative. The composition is structured to draw the viewer into the private space of the saint, encouraging a contemplative response. Cerezo died at a young age, yet he left behind a body of work that captures the aesthetic preferences of the Spanish Golden Age. His approach to the human form and his handling of light show a clear debt to his predecessors, while maintaining a distinct personal style. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts and the atmospheric quality of the original oil painting, making it a suitable addition for those interested in the history of European religious art.
