Robert John Thornton
A fine botanical print from Robert John Thornton's The Temple of Flora, featuring a Persian Cyclamen set against a dramatic, atmospheric backdrop.
The Persian Cyclamen is a plate from the ambitious publication, The Temple of Flora, or Garden of Nature, produced by the physician and botanist Robert John Thornton. This work represents a shift in botanical art during the early nineteenth century, moving away from purely scientific documentation towards a more dramatic, atmospheric presentation of plant life. In this print, the cyclamen is placed in a naturalistic setting rather than against a neutral background. The plant occupies the foreground, its white, reflexed petals and heart-shaped leaves rendered with precision. Behind the specimen, a dark, moody environment unfolds, featuring a distant architectural structure and rolling hills under a twilight sky. The contrast between the illuminated petals and the shadowed, earthy tones of the ground creates a sense of depth and theatre. The use of aquatint allows for subtle gradations of tone, particularly in the sky and the textured bark of the tree to the right. Thornton commissioned various artists and engravers to contribute to this series, aiming to combine the rigour of Linnaean classification with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Romantic era. The result is a collection that prioritises mood and environment as much as the botanical accuracy of the subject. This print captures the specific character of the cyclamen, showing its delicate stems and distinct foliage while situating it within a wider, imagined world. It remains a notable example of the intersection between scientific enquiry and artistic expression in British printmaking.
