Claude Gillot (1673-1722) was a French painter, printmaker, and designer, known for his decorative and theatrical designs. He trained with his father, a decorative painter, and later studied with Jean-Baptiste Corneille. Gillot's work often featured scenes from the commedia dell'arte, as well as historical and mythological subjects. He is also recognised as an early influence on Antoine Watteau. 'The Phoenix and the Owl' is an etching that illustrates a fable. The composition shows a phoenix perched on a rocky outcrop, surrounded by foliage.
