A detailed 1652 etching by Paulus Potter depicting two horses in a quiet, rural Dutch setting.
Paulus Potter, a Dutch Golden Age painter and etcher, focused his career on the depiction of animals within their natural surroundings. This etching, dated 1652, demonstrates his technical proficiency with the copper plate. The composition features two horses positioned in the foreground, rendered with careful attention to their musculature and coat texture. One horse faces away from the viewer, while the other stands in profile, creating a sense of quiet observation.
In the background, a flat Dutch horizon stretches toward a distant village, marked by a church spire and a windmill. Potter uses fine, controlled lines to suggest the texture of the horses' manes and the rough bark of the tree on the left. The open space of the field provides a sense of scale, typical of the period's interest in rural life and the Dutch countryside. Unlike his larger oil paintings, this etching relies on the clarity of the etched line to define form and light. The work reflects the artist's interest in the anatomy of livestock, a subject he returned to throughout his short career. The sparse, open composition allows the viewer to focus on the physical presence of the animals, which are presented without idealisation. This print is a representative example of seventeenth-century Dutch printmaking, where the observation of everyday subjects became a primary focus for artists. The signature and date are clearly visible in the lower right corner, confirming the work's provenance within Potter's oeuvre.
