A detailed architectural study of the Roman bridge at Narni, rendered in pen and brown ink wash by French artist Jean-Thomas Thibault.
Jean-Thomas Thibault, a French architect and draughtsman, produced this study of the Ponte di Augusto at Narni during his travels in Italy. The work captures the remains of the Roman bridge, which spans the Nera river valley. Thibault employs a precise, architectural approach to the masonry of the arch, contrasting the structural rigidity of the ancient stone with the organic, soft forms of the surrounding foliage.
The composition is framed by the natural contours of the hillside, drawing the eye through the massive archway towards the distant, hazy mountain range. The use of brown ink wash provides a sense of depth and atmospheric perspective, typical of the period's interest in documenting classical ruins. Thibault's training as an architect is evident in his careful observation of the bridge's construction, yet the drawing retains a picturesque quality that was highly sought after by collectors of the Grand Tour era.
This piece reflects the European fascination with the remnants of antiquity. By focusing on the bridge, Thibault invites the viewer to consider the scale of Roman engineering against the backdrop of the Italian countryside. The muted palette and delicate line work allow the viewer to focus on the interplay between light and shadow across the weathered stone surfaces. It is a work that balances technical accuracy with a sensitive response to the environment, providing a clear window into the aesthetic priorities of late eighteenth-century draughtsmanship. The inclusion of the original mount and handwritten title adds to the historical character of the piece, preserving the context in which such studies were collected and appreciated by contemporaries.
