The Jas de Bouffan estate, located near Aix-en-Provence, provided Paul Cézanne with a recurring subject throughout his career. This specific composition captures the family property, focusing on the large pool that occupied a central position in the grounds. Cézanne employs a structured approach to the scene, using distinct planes of colour to define the architecture, the water, and the surrounding terrain. The composition is anchored by the vertical axis of a bare tree, which bisects the view and creates a tension between the foreground and the distant buildings.
Unlike the fleeting light effects favoured by his Impressionist contemporaries, Cézanne seeks a sense of permanence in this work. The brushwork is deliberate, with patches of pigment applied to build form rather than to capture atmospheric conditions.
