Raoul Dufy, a native of Le Havre, returned to his home port frequently to capture the maritime activity that defined the city. This work dates to the early twentieth century, a period when Dufy was actively experimenting with the bold colour palettes and simplified forms characteristic of the Fauvist movement. Unlike the more traditional maritime paintings of the era, this composition prioritises the emotional resonance of the scene over strict topographical accuracy.

The painting features a collection of vessels moored in the harbour, their hulls rendered in flat, saturated tones of orange and deep blue. Dufy employs a shorthand approach to detail, using abbreviated brushwork to suggest the rigging and masts against a muted, atmospheric sky.
