A serene maritime scene by Maxime Maufra, capturing the historic architecture and reflective waters of the Port of Saint Goustan in Brittany.
Maxime Maufra, a painter associated with the Pont-Aven School, frequently turned his attention to the rugged coastlines and historic harbours of Brittany. In this depiction of the Port of Saint Goustan, Maufra employs a technique that balances structural clarity with the fluid, atmospheric qualities of the water. The composition is anchored by the row of traditional stone buildings lining the quay, their pale facades and dark roofs rendered with thick, deliberate brushwork that suggests the texture of weathered masonry.
The foreground is dominated by the movement of the water, where Maufra uses short, choppy strokes to capture the play of light and reflection. A small sailing vessel occupies the lower left, providing a sense of scale against the architecture. The sky is filled with soft, broken clouds, painted in shades of blue and grey that echo the tones found in the harbour below. Unlike the more radical experiments of his contemporaries, Maufra maintains a clear representational focus, prioritising the specific character of the Breton environment.
His approach to colour is restrained, relying on a palette of ochres, greys, and muted blues to convey the cool, maritime atmosphere of the region. The painting avoids excessive detail, instead using the physical application of paint to define the forms of the buildings and the ripples of the tide. This work captures a quiet moment in a busy commercial port, reflecting the artist's deep familiarity with the coastal life of western France. It is a characteristic example of his mature style, where the influence of Impressionist light studies meets a more solid, traditional approach to composition and form.
