A classic Dutch Golden Age genre scene by Gabriel Metsu, depicting a market interaction between a poultry seller and a young woman.
Gabriel Metsu, a master of the Dutch Golden Age, produced The Poultry Seller around 1662. This work belongs to the genre tradition, which focuses on scenes of everyday life. The composition features an elderly man seated on a barrel, holding a white cockerel, while a young woman in a red jacket and white apron stands before him. A small spaniel looks up at the interaction, adding a sense of domestic realism to the scene.
The setting is an outdoor market area, defined by a brick wall and a bare tree. Metsu employs a controlled palette, using light to draw attention to the figures and the textures of their clothing. The contrast between the weathered appearance of the seller and the refined attire of the woman suggests a social narrative common in seventeenth-century Dutch art. The inclusion of various birds, a basket, and a dead hare provides a sense of material detail, demonstrating the artist's technical skill in rendering different surfaces and forms.
Metsu was active in Leiden and Amsterdam, and his work often reflects the influence of Gerrit Dou and the Leiden fijnschilders, or fine painters. This group was known for their precise brushwork and attention to detail. The Poultry Seller is a characteristic example of this approach, where the artist balances the narrative elements with a careful observation of light and shadow. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, where it remains a study of seventeenth-century social and commercial life.
