A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicting the biblical preparation for Passover, featuring narrative elements of the Exodus.
This hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicts the biblical narrative of the Passover preparation as described in the Book of Exodus. Sadeler, a member of a prolific family of engravers from Antwerp, was known for his technical precision and his contribution to the dissemination of religious imagery across Europe during the late sixteenth century. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the interior scene where figures gather around a table to prepare the sacrificial lamb, and the exterior view through an open doorway where an angel descends upon the land of Egypt.
The artist employs a narrative style common to the period, where multiple temporal moments are compressed into a single frame. The figures are rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive gestures characteristic of Northern Mannerism. The use of hand-applied colour adds a layer of visual clarity to the scene, distinguishing the garments of the participants and the dramatic action occurring in the background. The inclusion of a small dog in the foreground and the domestic details of the interior provide a sense of grounded reality, contrasting with the supernatural event unfolding outside.
This print reflects the broader interest in biblical illustration that occupied many printmakers in the Low Countries during this era. The Latin inscription at the base provides the scriptural context, while the French text below offers a summary of the events depicted. The work demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with the Sadeler workshop, which played a role in the visual culture of the Counter-Reformation. The balance between the domestic focus of the foreground and the expansive, narrative background creates a structured visual experience. This piece is a representative example of the intersection between religious instruction and artistic production in the late Renaissance.
