A refined mezzotint engraving by Charles Howard Hodges, depicting the biblical Presentation in the Temple with masterful tonal depth.
This mezzotint engraving by Charles Howard Hodges depicts the biblical scene of the Presentation in the Temple. The composition is based on an original painting by the Italian artist Bartolomeo Schedoni. Hodges, a British artist who spent much of his career in the Netherlands, was a skilled practitioner of the mezzotint technique, which allows for subtle gradations of tone and soft transitions between light and shadow.
The scene captures the moment Simeon holds the infant Christ, while the Virgin Mary reaches out to receive him. To the left, figures observe the event with solemn expressions. The architectural setting is minimal, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the central figures. The use of deep blacks and soft greys creates a sense of volume in the drapery and a quiet, meditative atmosphere.
Hodges was well-regarded for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of oil works into the medium of print. This particular work demonstrates his command over the tonal range of the copper plate. The figures are rendered with a focus on naturalistic form, typical of the late eighteenth-century approach to religious subjects. The print is titled in Dutch, 'De Voorstelling van den Heiland in den Tempel', reflecting the artist's professional life in Amsterdam. The work remains a clear example of the technical precision required for high-quality reproductive engraving during this period.
