A detailed copperplate engraving documenting a formal Qing Dynasty court ceremony, designed by Jesuit missionary Jean Denis Attiret.
This copperplate engraving depicts a formal court ceremony during the Qing Dynasty. It is part of a larger series commissioned by the Qianlong Emperor to document military campaigns in the Western Regions. Jean Denis Attiret, a Jesuit missionary and court painter, contributed to the design of these compositions, which were later sent to Paris to be engraved by master printmakers under the direction of Charles-Nicolas Cochin.
The composition employs a high-angle perspective, typical of the period, to document the scale and order of the imperial court. The scene shows the formal presentation of captives, with the Emperor positioned in the upper right pavilion, observing the proceedings. The architecture is rendered with precision, reflecting the blend of Chinese structural forms and the European influence of linear perspective introduced by Jesuit artists at the court.
Each figure is placed with geometric clarity, creating a sense of rigid formality. The inclusion of calligraphy at the top provides context for the event, linking the visual record to the literary and political objectives of the Emperor. The work functions as a historical document, capturing the intersection of European artistic techniques and Chinese imperial propaganda. The fine lines and cross-hatching demonstrate the technical skill required to translate the original drawings into the medium of engraving. This print offers a view into the cross-cultural exchanges that occurred within the Qing court, where European artists adapted their training to suit the requirements of the Chinese monarchy.
