A nineteenth-century colour print by George Baxter depicting Victoria, Princess Royal, in formal attire.
This portrait depicts Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, following her marriage to Prince Frederick William of Prussia. George Baxter, a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, produced this image using his patented process. This technique involved a combination of an intaglio key plate, usually steel or copper, followed by the application of multiple oil-based colours from wood blocks. The result is a refined, painterly quality that mimics the appearance of a miniature or oil painting.
The Princess is shown in three-quarter profile, wearing a tiara and a lace-trimmed gown with a prominent sash. Her expression is composed, reflecting the formal portraiture conventions of the mid-Victorian era. The background is a muted, metallic gold tone, which serves to draw attention to the subject. Baxter's work was highly popular during the mid-nineteenth century, as it allowed for the mass production of high-quality, coloured images that were accessible to a wider public than traditional oil paintings.
Baxter prints are characterised by their precise registration and soft, blended colour transitions. This specific work captures the royal subject with a level of detail that was technically advanced for the period. The print demonstrates the capabilities of the Baxter process, particularly in the rendering of textures such as the delicate lace and the reflective quality of the jewellery. As a historical document, this print provides insight into the visual culture of the British monarchy during the mid-nineteenth century, documenting the appearance of a figure who would later become the German Empress.
