A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder, depicting the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son in a scene of revelry.
This engraving by Hans Collaert the Elder depicts the biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. The scene focuses on the moment of excess, where the son squanders his inheritance amidst revelry. Collaert employs the visual language of Northern Mannerism, characterised by elongated figures and a crowded, theatrical composition. The central group is engaged in drinking and music, surrounded by symbols of vice and fleeting pleasure. A woman pours wine into a chalice, while others play instruments, creating a sense of chaotic movement.
In the background, architectural elements and a fountain suggest a classical setting, common in Flemish prints of the sixteenth century. The artist uses fine, precise lines to define the textures of fabric, skin, and the surrounding foliage. The inclusion of a Latin inscription at the base provides a moralising context, typical of the period's approach to religious narratives. The composition is dense, with figures arranged to guide the eye across the various activities of the scene. The print reflects the technical skill of the Antwerp school of engravers, who were instrumental in the dissemination of artistic styles across Europe during this era. The contrast between the light and shadow is managed through delicate hatching, which adds volume to the figures and depth to the outdoor setting. This work is an example of the narrative print tradition, where complex moral lessons were translated into visual form for a wider audience. The attention to detail, from the musical instruments to the scattered coins on the ground, invites close inspection of the various elements that constitute this scene of moral decline.
