A classic Neo-Impressionist lithograph by Henri-Edmond Cross, featuring a coastal scene with cypress trees and figures rendered in his signature pointillist style.
Henri-Edmond Cross, born Henri-Edmond Delacroix, was a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism. After relocating to the south of France in 1891, his work shifted away from the strict scientific application of colour theory favoured by Georges Seurat. Instead, he adopted a more fluid, expressive approach to the pointillist technique. This work, The Promenade (Landscape with Cypresses), demonstrates his mastery of the divisionist method, where small, distinct dots of colour are applied to the surface to create a luminous effect when viewed from a distance.
The composition features a series of tall, slender cypress trees that frame the view of a coastal scene. In the foreground, figures in light-coloured garments move through the space, their forms partially obscured by the rhythmic application of blue, green, and yellow pigment. Beyond the trees, the calm water is populated by the silhouettes of sailing vessels, their masts echoing the verticality of the cypresses. The palette is dominated by cool blues and soft yellows, capturing the specific light of the Mediterranean coast.
Cross utilised this technique to move beyond mere representation, aiming to evoke the atmosphere and sensory experience of the French Riviera. The dots are larger and more varied in shape than those found in earlier Neo-Impressionist works, creating a sense of movement across the surface. This print captures the essence of his later style, where the rigid structure of early pointillism gives way to a more decorative and emotive use of colour. The interplay between the static verticality of the trees and the gentle movement of the figures creates a balanced, harmonious scene that reflects the artist's deep connection to the coastal environment of his adopted home.
