A detailed reproduction from Sandro Botticelli's fresco cycle in the Sistine Chapel, depicting the biblical rebellion against Moses.
This work is a detail from the large-scale fresco cycle located on the walls of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. Sandro Botticelli painted this scene during his time in Rome, commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV. The narrative depicts the biblical rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram against the authority of Moses and Aaron, as recounted in the Book of Numbers.
Botticelli organises the composition with a focus on the tension between the figures and the architectural backdrop. The scene incorporates classical elements, such as the Arch of Constantine, which serves as a visual reference to Roman antiquity. The figures are rendered with the linear precision characteristic of the artist, displaying varied expressions and period-appropriate attire. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of volume within the group, while the background provides a structured environment for the unfolding drama.
As a component of the Sistine Chapel decoration, the fresco functions as part of a larger theological programme intended to affirm the authority of the papacy. Botticelli balances the complex narrative requirements with his own stylistic preferences, including a preference for clear outlines and graceful figure placement. The architectural ruins in the background add a sense of historical weight to the biblical event, grounding the scene in a recognisable, albeit stylised, setting. This print captures the specific interaction of the figures in the foreground, allowing for a closer examination of the artist's technique and his approach to narrative painting during the Quattrocento.
