A rare uki-e woodblock print by Utagawa Kuninaga, depicting the pyramids of Egypt through the lens of eighteenth-century Japanese perspective art.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kuninaga belongs to the genre of uki-e, or perspective pictures, which gained popularity in late eighteenth-century Japan. These works demonstrate the fascination Japanese artists held for Western linear perspective, a technique introduced through imported Dutch copperplate engravings. The composition employs a structured, receding view to depict the pyramids, though the rendering of the structures and the figures reflects a distinctively Japanese interpretation of foreign subjects.
The scene features figures dressed in European-style attire, complete with ruffs and coats, positioned before large, geometric pyramid forms. A prominent pine tree occupies the foreground, providing a visual anchor that contrasts with the exotic, distant architecture. The print is part of the series Newly Published Dutch Perspective Prints (Shinpan Oranda uki-e), which sought to satisfy the curiosity of the Edo public regarding distant lands. The artist uses a muted palette of earthy greens, soft ochres, and deep reds to define the forms, while the line work remains precise and controlled, typical of the period's printmaking techniques.
Unlike traditional Japanese depictions of nature, this work prioritises the architectural geometry of the pyramids to create a sense of depth. The inclusion of a small dog and the specific clothing styles of the figures suggest a playful, imaginative approach to geography. This print serves as an example of how Japanese artists adapted foreign artistic conventions to suit local tastes, blending the exoticism of the outside world with the established visual language of the ukiyo-e school. The work remains a curious document of cross-cultural exchange, where the reality of Egyptian monuments is filtered through the lens of Dutch-influenced Japanese print design.
