A detailed etching and engraving by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, depicting hunters in a vast, panoramic river valley.
The Rabbit Hunt is a fine example of the printmaking tradition established by Hieronymus Cock in Antwerp. Pieter Bruegel the Elder provided the design, which was subsequently translated into an etching and engraving. The composition displays the characteristic panoramic view often associated with the artist, where the eye is drawn from the immediate foreground into a vast, receding distance.
In the foreground, two hunters are positioned near a large tree. One figure aims a crossbow at a rabbit, while the other stands ready with a spear. The scene is quiet, focusing on the tension of the hunt rather than overt action. Beyond this immediate encounter, the view opens to a wide river valley. A castle sits atop a rocky crag on the right, overlooking the water. The background contains a distant town, complete with ships and smaller structures, demonstrating the artist's interest in spatial depth and the integration of human activity within a broader environment.
The print reflects the sixteenth-century fascination with the natural world and the activities of rural life. The lines are precise, allowing for a clear distinction between the textures of the rocky terrain, the foliage of the trees, and the smooth surface of the river. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, H. Cock excud, confirms its origin within the active print workshops of the period. This work offers a view into the technical skill required to produce such detailed imagery for a growing market of collectors and art enthusiasts in the Low Countries.
