The Raising of the Cross is a triptych commissioned for the Church of Saint Walburga in Antwerp. Peter Paul Rubens completed this work shortly after his return to Flanders from Italy, where he absorbed the influence of Michelangelo and Caravaggio. The composition demonstrates the characteristic energy of the Baroque period, focusing on the physical exertion required to hoist the cross into position.

The central panel captures the moment of maximum tension. A group of muscular figures strains against the weight of the cross, their bodies contorted in a display of effort. The diagonal placement of the cross creates a sense of instability, drawing the eye across the canvas. Rubens employs a dramatic use of light and shadow to model the anatomy of the figures, giving them a sculptural quality that occupies the space with force.

The side panels provide context to the central scene. On the left, the Virgin Mary and Saint John are depicted in a state of mourning, their expressions conveying grief. The right panel shows Roman soldiers preparing for the execution, including the two thieves who are to be crucified alongside Christ. The unified colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and deep shadows, ties the three panels together into a cohesive narrative.

Rubens utilised a technique involving thin glazes over a light ground, which allows for the fluid brushwork visible throughout the composition. This approach enables the depiction of movement and emotion, moving away from the static compositions of the previous century. The work remains a primary example of the Flemish Baroque style, demonstrating the artist's ability to manage large-scale religious commissions with technical precision and dramatic flair.
