A dramatic Baroque depiction of the classical myth of Europa, featuring fluid brushwork and a striking blue drapery by the Neapolitan master Luca Giordano.
Luca Giordano, a prolific Neapolitan painter of the late seventeenth century, depicts the classical myth of Europa in this composition. The narrative follows Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Jupiter assumes the form of a bull to abduct the Phoenician princess. Giordano captures the moment of transit across the sea, with Europa seated upon the animal, her posture conveying a mixture of alarm and resignation. A bright blue drapery billows behind her, providing a visual counterpoint to the darker tones of the bull and the surrounding water. The scene includes several putti, one of whom hovers above with a floral garland, while others emerge from the waves. To the right, a figure gazes directly at the viewer, adding a layer of self-awareness to the mythological tableau. Giordano employs a fluid brushwork technique, characteristic of his rapid working method, which earned him the nickname 'Luca fa presto'. The lighting is dramatic, typical of the Baroque period, focusing attention on the pale skin of Europa against the darker, atmospheric background of the sea and sky. Giordano's ability to synthesise influences from Venetian masters, such as Titian and Veronese, is evident in the colour palette and the treatment of the figures. The composition balances the central action with peripheral details, creating a sense of movement across the canvas. This work demonstrates the artist's technical facility and his engagement with classical themes that were popular among the European aristocracy of the time. The print captures the textures of the fabric, the musculature of the bull, and the soft modelling of the figures, offering a clear view of Giordano's painterly approach to mythological subjects.
