A detailed historical engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef documenting the 1648 ratification of the Peace of Münster, based on the painting by Gerard ter Borch.
This detailed etching and engraving by Jonas Suyderhoef depicts the formal ratification of the Peace of Münster in 1648. The work is based on a painting by Gerard ter Borch, who was present at the event. The scene captures the interior of the town hall in Münster, where the delegates of the Spanish Crown and the Dutch Republic gathered to sign the treaty that ended the Eighty Years' War.
Suyderhoef employs a precise technique to render the large assembly of figures. The composition focuses on the central table where the delegates stand, their hands raised in the act of swearing the oath. The artist manages the complex arrangement of individuals with clarity, distinguishing the various diplomats and officials through subtle variations in posture and attire. The architectural setting, including the wooden panelling and the chandelier, provides a sense of the physical space occupied by the historical figures.
The print includes a Latin inscription at the base, which identifies the event and the participants. This document serves as a visual record of a diplomatic milestone. Suyderhoef, a skilled printmaker of the Dutch Golden Age, was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the linear medium of engraving. His work here demonstrates a mastery of light and shadow, which helps to organise the crowded scene into a coherent narrative. The print remains a primary source for understanding the visual representation of seventeenth-century political gatherings, offering a glimpse into the formal procedures of the era.
