A detailed 17th-century etching by Simon Frisius depicting the historic Regulierspoort gatehouse in Amsterdam.
This etching by Simon Frisius depicts the Regulierspoort, a medieval gatehouse that once served as a defensive entry point to Amsterdam. Frisius, a printmaker active in the early 17th century, demonstrates his technical proficiency through the use of varied line weights to define the architectural structure of the gate, the surrounding water, and the small figures populating the foreground. The composition captures the gatehouse with its characteristic towers and drawbridge, set against a backdrop of the city skyline.
In the foreground, the artist includes small boats and figures, providing a sense of scale and daily activity. The water is rendered with horizontal hatching, while the sky features soft, rounded clouds typical of the period's printmaking style. The inclusion of the title, 'D'oude REGULLIERS Poorte t Amsterdam', at the bottom of the plate identifies the subject clearly. This work offers a glimpse into the urban development of Amsterdam before the city's major expansion in the mid-17th century. The Regulierspoort itself was eventually demolished, making such prints valuable records of the city's architectural history. Frisius was known for his ability to translate the nuances of light and texture into the medium of etching, a skill evident in the way he handles the masonry of the gate and the reflections on the water surface. The print reflects the interest in local topography and urban life that characterised Dutch art during this era, providing a factual representation of the site as it appeared to contemporary observers.
