A dramatic Baroque depiction of the liberation of Saint Peter by an angel, rendered with characteristic tenebrism and expressive detail.
Bernardo Strozzi, a prominent figure of the Genoese Baroque, captures a moment of quiet intensity in this depiction of the biblical liberation of Saint Peter. The narrative, drawn from the Acts of the Apostles, shows an angel guiding the apostle from his confinement. Strozzi focuses on the physical interaction between the two figures, using a tight, half-length composition that draws the viewer into the immediate drama of the scene.
The artist employs a characteristic tenebrist approach, where the figures emerge from a dark, indistinct background. This technique directs attention to the expressive faces and the tactile quality of the drapery. The angel, rendered with soft, youthful features and auburn hair, contrasts with the weathered, bearded countenance of Saint Peter. Strozzi uses a palette dominated by earthy tones, punctuated by the bright, ochre-yellow fabric draped over the apostle, which provides a visual anchor for the composition.
Strozzi was known for his fluid brushwork and his ability to convey emotional weight through gesture. Here, the focus is not on the surrounding prison architecture, but on the delicate, precise movement of the angel's hands as they attend to the shackles. The lighting is directional, creating strong contrasts that define the volume of the figures and the texture of their garments. This work demonstrates the artist's mastery of the Baroque idiom, prioritising human presence and psychological engagement over complex spatial arrangements. The painting remains a fine example of the Italian Baroque interest in capturing transitory, miraculous events through a lens of grounded, human realism.
