A detailed woodcut by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Holy Family in a domestic setting, showcasing his mastery of line and perspective.
The Repose in Egypt is a woodcut from the Life of the Virgin series by Albrecht Dürer. It depicts the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt. Dürer places the figures within a contemporary German architectural setting rather than a traditional biblical environment. Saint Joseph is shown working as a carpenter, using an adze to shape a piece of timber, while the Virgin Mary sits nearby, occupied with her sewing. A group of putti or child angels assists with the chores, gathering wood and playing, which adds a domestic quality to the scene.
In the upper portion of the composition, God the Father and the Holy Spirit appear amidst clouds, casting rays of light down upon the family. The background features a detailed townscape with a castle perched on a hill, demonstrating Dürer's mastery of perspective and his interest in the natural world. The architectural elements, including the stone masonry and the arched gateway, are rendered with precise, clean lines that define the structure and texture of the surfaces.
This work demonstrates the technical capability of the woodcut medium during the early sixteenth century. Dürer used varying densities of hatching to create shadow and volume, allowing for a sense of depth within the two-dimensional plane. The inclusion of the artist's monogram, the AD initials, is visible in the lower right corner, a signature mark of his prints. The composition balances the quiet activity of the foreground with the expansive, detailed background, creating a narrative that feels both grounded and celestial. The print remains a clear example of Dürer's ability to integrate human experience with religious themes through his disciplined approach to line and form.
