Painted between 1596 and 1600, this work is part of the altarpiece commissioned for the Colegio de Doña María de Aragón in Madrid. El Greco, born Doménikos Theotokópoulos, employs his characteristic elongated figures and dramatic, non-naturalistic lighting to convey the spiritual intensity of the event. The composition is vertical, drawing the eye upward toward the figure of Christ, who rises from the tomb with a sense of weightless ascension. Christ occupies the upper centre, draped in a white shroud and holding a banner, his body rendered with the attenuated proportions that define the artist's mature style. Below him, the soldiers are depicted in various states of shock and disarray. Their bodies twist in complex, contorted poses, creating a sense of chaotic movement that contrasts with the serene, ethereal presence of the risen Christ. The palette is dominated by cool, ghostly tones, punctuated by the deep crimson of Christ's mantle and the earthy hues of the soldiers' armour. El Greco discards traditional perspective in favour of a flattened, visionary space. The background is indistinct, focusing the viewer entirely on the interaction between the divine figure and the human witnesses. The brushwork is fluid and expressive, prioritising emotional impact over anatomical precision. This approach allows the artist to transcend the physical reality of the scene, creating a composition that feels suspended in time. The work remains a primary example of the artist's ability to synthesise Byzantine iconographic traditions with the expressive possibilities of the European Renaissance. It is currently held in the collection of the Museo del Prado in Madrid, where it continues to be studied for its unique handling of light and form.
