This work by Titian, a master of the Venetian school, depicts the moment of Christ rising from the tomb. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: the celestial realm above and the earthly sphere below. Christ is shown hovering in the air, his body illuminated by a soft, divine light. He holds a banner, a traditional symbol of victory over death. His posture is upright and calm, contrasting with the chaotic reaction of the soldiers stationed at the tomb.

Below, the soldiers are caught in various states of alarm and confusion. One figure, clad in armour, shields his eyes from the brilliance of the apparition, while others remain slumped or startled by the sudden event. Titian employs a warm, golden palette for the sky, which suggests the early light of dawn. The shadows are deep, providing a sense of volume to the figures and the stone structure of the tomb. The artist uses his characteristic painterly technique, where the application of oil paint creates soft transitions between light and shadow, known as sfumato. This approach allows the figures to emerge from the background with a sense of physical presence.

The painting was originally created for the church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Brescia. It demonstrates the artist's ability to manage complex narrative scenes through careful arrangement of figures and atmospheric effects. The focus remains on the contrast between the serene, floating figure of Christ and the grounded, reactive nature of the human observers.
