A portrait by Kimon Loghi depicting a woman in a moment of musical reflection, rendered with soft brushwork and a moody, atmospheric colour palette.
Kimon Loghi, a Romanian painter of Greek descent, produced this portrait during the early twentieth century. The work captures a female subject in a moment of quiet contemplation, her gaze directed away from the viewer. The composition focuses on the sitter, whose expression suggests an internal response to an auditory experience, aligning with the title. Loghi employs a soft, painterly technique, prioritising the mood of the subject over rigid anatomical precision.
The colour palette relies on a contrast between the deep, atmospheric blue of the background and the warm, earthy tones of the subject's attire. The sitter wears a decorative headband and a multi-layered necklace, elements that suggest a fascination with classical or exotic adornment common in the Symbolist period. The brushwork remains visible, particularly in the rendering of the fabric and the background, which adds a tactile quality to the surface of the canvas.
Loghi studied in Munich, a centre for artistic innovation during his formative years. This influence is evident in his approach to light and shadow, which creates a sense of volume around the figure. The background is not a specific location but rather a wash of colour that isolates the subject, forcing the viewer to engage with her expression and the implied narrative of the music. The work avoids excessive detail, opting instead for a focus on the psychological state of the individual. This approach reflects the broader interest in subjectivity and emotion that characterised much of the European art produced in the decades following the turn of the century. The piece remains a representative example of Loghi's ability to combine traditional portraiture with a more evocative, atmospheric sensibility.
