Caspar David Friedrich, a central figure of German Romanticism, produced this view of the Riesengebirge (Giant Mountains) during the final decade of his career. The painting captures a mountainous vista at twilight, where the foreground remains shrouded in deep shadow, while the distant peaks catch the fading light of the sun. Friedrich often utilised the motif of the mountain range to explore themes of distance, solitude, and the vastness of the natural world.

The composition relies on a series of receding planes. The dark, silhouetted slopes in the foreground frame the scene, drawing the eye toward the lighter, atmospheric layers of the mountains beyond.
