A fine engraving by Jacopo de' Barbari depicting the Risen Christ, showcasing the technical precision and classical influence of the early Renaissance.
This engraving by Jacopo de' Barbari depicts the Risen Christ standing in a frontal pose, holding a banner of the Resurrection. The figure is rendered with the characteristic grace associated with the Venetian artist, who spent significant time working in Germany and the Netherlands. His style bridges the gap between the Italian Renaissance interest in human proportion and the Northern European tradition of precise, linear detail.
The composition is defined by the rhythmic folds of the drapery, which wrap around the body of Christ. The artist employs a delicate hatching technique to model the musculature and the soft texture of the fabric. A faint, radiating halo surrounds the head, suggesting a divine presence without overwhelming the human form. In the lower right corner, the artist includes his signature mark, the caduceus, which appears in many of his graphic works.
Jacopo de' Barbari was a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer, and their interaction influenced the development of printmaking in the early sixteenth century. This work demonstrates the technical proficiency required for copperplate engraving during this period. The clarity of the lines and the balanced anatomy reflect the broader artistic shift towards classical ideals. As a print, this image would have been accessible to a wider audience, circulating the aesthetic values of the period across European borders. The work remains a clear example of the technical and stylistic exchange between Northern and Southern European art centres at the turn of the century.
