Description
The Roaches in Staffordshire offer a rocky Peak District ridge, with broken stone edges framing green farmland far below a foreground of heather, rough grass and a narrow descending path.
Managed by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust, The Roaches occupies a broad landscape on the Peak District edge. Walks along its rocky ridge provide wide views, while nearby Back Forest contains Lud's Church, a deep chasm that adds woodland shelter to the exposed upland setting.
Pale angular rock faces rise on both sides of a narrow gap. A rough path drops between them through brown-purple heather and patches of green grass. Beyond the opening, enclosed fields stretch towards blue ridges and a small pointed hill. The warm heather tones suggest late summer or autumn, with bright clear light beneath bulky white clouds.
